To build the capacity of Oakland youth to overcome economic and personal barriers to work towards self-sufficiency.
How do we do it?
We understand our youth and have a community of leaders including staff, gardeners, restaurateurs, instructors and volunteers who create a supportive mentoring and hands-on training environment that provide JCS youth with attainable goals, skills development and confidence needed to break barriers that are faced when moving into adulthood.
Why are we unique?
We help youth build an interest, develop their creativity and appreciate the culture of good food. Along with culinary skills development we are infusing urban farming and food industry service training coupled with entry level job placement so that participants can thrive. Building on the wisdom of everyone in the training cycle JCS participants have the opportunity to take a job and turn it into a career.
